Ham and Navy Bean Soup

Ham and Navy Bean Soup

This ham and navy bean soup is quick and easy to prepare and it is inexpensive. (Just the way I like it.) When my mother tried it, she said it tasted just the way my great grandmother used to make it. It’s funny how something so simple can conjure up warm feelings and sweet memories of the past. 🙂

Here is the recipe:

Ham and Navy Bean Soup

Serves 8

(prep time: 15 minutes)

1 ham steak

1 large sweet round onion

2 cans of navy beans

1 can or 1 box of your favorite broth (I used beef broth)

2 tablespoons olive oil (or your favorite cooking oil)

Sea salt to taste

1. Chop ham steak into bite-sized pieces

2. Dice onions

3. Heat oil in soup pot

4. Add ham pieces into pot and sear pieces slightly

Try it!

5. Add onions and stir until onions begin to caramelize

6. Drain canned navy beans and add to pot

7. Add about 2 quarts of water and broth

8. Bring water to a boil

Serve with warm bread.  (:

9. Lower heat and let simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally

10. Add sea salt to taste

Optional: Garnish with watercress or green onions

Serve with your favorite warm bread

Hope you enjoy Great Grandma’s Ham and Navy Bean Soup!

Have a cozy day!
